Aspects of the Egyptian Civilization in the Coptic Period Architecture The Coptic architecture retained the spirit of the Pharaonic art, being the last link in the chain of the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations in Egypt. Churches constructed since the 5th century AD until the Islamic conquest of Egypt are considered models of Coptic architecture. Among them are the churches of the Babylon Fortress in Misr Al- Qadima District (Old Cairo). One of its churches is Virgin Mary Church known as the Hanging Church because it was erected upon the ruins of two huge towers belonging to the Roman fortress. This place had a role in the life of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary. Abu Serga Church - the oldest in Egypt- was built in the place where they lived. The Fortress as well includes Santa Barbara Church. St. Catherine Monastery within the stupendous Mountains Decoration Dominant decoration in the Coptic period was an extension of the method recurrent during previous periods in Egypt; using watercolour paints on walls covered by a surface of wet plaster creating frescos. Walls were ornamented with the colours of the decorations. The Coptic Museum in Cairo ( Misr Al - Qadima District ) abounds in the treasures of the Coptic Period during which drawing, handiworks, writing, sculpture and architecture excelled. Coptic Music The ancient Egyptians were familiar with music; when Christianity was introduced into Egypt, a type of churchlike music appeared . It was close in trend to the ancient Egyptian tunes and still the melodies played in the Coptic Church bear ancient Egyptian names. |
